    Hello,

My name is Jim and my girlfriend and I recently got an urban chicken coop for our backyard, so I am on this forum to get some tip and read about everyone's experiences and hopefully I can gain some wisdom and provide a clean and healthy habitat for my birds. We live in Des Moines Iowa where we can have up to 50 chickens an acre, but since we have a city lot we can have a maximum of 25 chickens. For now though we have 4 hens, 2 Australorps and 2 Rhode Island Reds. I, and Jeniece, look forward to gaining some knowledge and making some friends.

By for now, excited to be here.

Welcome to BYC, Jim! Glad you decided to join our flock. A good place to start down the road to wisdom (at least where chickens are concerned) is BYC's Learning Center. If you have any questions, just post them on the forum and I'm sure you'll gets lots of replies. We are here to help in any way we can. You have some very good, hardy, layers. Black Australorps are my favorite standard breed; very hardy, calm and gentle, and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. Good luck with your flock.

    Welcome to BYC!

That's great you can have so many birds, lots of room for growth (and trust me, chicken math will kick in at some point). BYC has a ton of information and a very helpful community so spend some time finding your way around and getting comfortable with this website (it's very user-friendly). One thing I use frequently is the Search right under the logo, amazing the things you can find out about anything you've ever wondered about!

    Enjoy your birds!

Sounds like you have a lovely flock! Definitely follow the link that Sumi provided to the learning center. Lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry.
