External Pip help

One of my ducklings externally pipped over 12 hours ago and has made no more progress. I know this is normal however my concern is:

The outer membrane just under the shell does not appear broken at all. CAN THE DUCKLING BREATH?

I think that he was able to breath through the outer membrane because he spent almost two days with and external pip but no hole in the OUTER membrane.
Needless to say she was a blind weak little thing and had an assisted hatch (she will not be used for breeding) She is half the size of her siblings and mostly blind, but has become our favorite. She is so little and loves people more than anything.
