Should I be giving chickens protein if they are on laying pellets and also scratch feed? If yes how often and what would be best choices?

Greetings, pennysur, and [IMG]! Pleased you joined our community. I don't think it would be necessary to up their protein since you are giving a layer ration - which should have adequate protein - as well as scratch. I know some folks give a little extra protein during the molt, and some give extra scratch for fats during cold times, but in my opinion what you are feeding them is just what they need. Also, here's a link to some poultry folks in Canada if you'd like to chat with them: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/144/canadians-check-in-here

G’Day from down under pennysur [IMG] Welcome!

I agree with the advice you have received so far and I do not worry about protein unless someone is moulting. As redsoxs has suggested, the balanced diet should be adequate.

I hope you enjoy BYC. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends [IMG]
