I have never had turkeys before and wondering...when they fan their tail feathers does that mean male or do the hens do that as well?

Both sexes can do this, however I find that males hold them more upright (straight up and down) and females tend to fan them out in almost normal position with a slight lift sometimes. Females usually only fan their tails when they are on alert or are irritated (if they see a hawk, for example).

Thank you...I'm wondering if I have a boy...this was straight up and down and it was during a challenge from a chicken.

Also, the hens can't/won't hold it as long as the toms.

Here is my mature Narragansett hen. She is upset with the street dept workers with their big noisy track hoes and dump trucks. She can see them through the gate and she is NOT a happy girl.
