My buff Orpington is 13 months old and I noticed this feather loss on her neck: [IMG]

Do you know what it is?

Do you have other hens in your coop? They could be plucking them out.

I have 3 others. But they seem to get along fine. The most dominant chicken is her, so they don't usually don't mess with her. But do you think they could be trying to establish dominance now? Sometimes she broods. I've heard they pull out their feathers to keep the eggs warm. Is that true? She did have a little peck in her comb that was bleeding, so maybe they are picking on her.

Maybe theyre trying to bother her while shes sitting on eggs. They do pluck their own feathers to keep the eggs warm but thats only under the hen. She will pluck under her to make her skin exposed because direct body heat will keep her eggs warmer.

I have two americauna hens. Sisters...One makes her sister pluck her neck feathers and she closes her eyeslike shes enjoying being groomed. But if you say your hen is bleeding then they could be picking on her while shes nesting.

When my hens get further along with their batch if eggs, i close them off w food and water so they can do it in peace. They only like to get out once a day just to take a little break. Then go back to sitting.
