I put out a video today documenting our chicken system at the tail end of winter. We have 25 birds and since October I've spent 25 dollars on them. It actually was closer to 7/10 of a cent per bird per day, but that's harder to write! Through a combination of barter, collecting food scraps from local sources, and building huge organic matter piles to promote worms and other life, our chickens feed themselves on sprouts and rich organic matter and we'll end up with a mountain of finished compost for our spring gardens. This is the 2nd winter they've thrived through this design and we're excited to hope that others give it a try!
