I bought 5 sexlinks Dec 20th..have been working on their 8x8 coop and it'll be done this weekend..the girls are READY to go out!I give each one of them alone time with me and my family...once I even feel asleep with them all on the couch and woke up to a horrible mess...but anyhow I figured 3 cx for $6=30lbs of meat..Im down for that. But these babies are so sweet and I know in 2 months it'll be time to say goodbye..kinda sad that's all they get to live...bad idea!

It can be hard, but you have to keep it in your head that for them they have only one bad moment. Processing should always initiate respect for the animals that provide our nourishment. There are ways to help and you have to find what works for you. For some people it is not naming them, for others it is a different kind of interaction. I have found that there are some that are easier than others to let go. Remember CX tend to have a much lower quality of life later so in a sense keeping them longer increases their chances of a low quality of life at the end.

Good luck and know this is normal.

Thank you so much! You're so right..Im confused between do I give them love for the few months they are alive or just feed And water them? Are they jealous that Im picking up and loving on the other babies I got at the same time..or are they ok..I know that sounds... Crazy hahha

Trust me, I can tell you from experience that they get a whole lot less cute as time goes on. :) Also it's easier when you have a group that look the same so you can't pick individual favorites.

And - I vote for give them the best life you can. But all the while you need to remind yourself "meats, meats, meats". They're going to be surprised for only a split second on the one bad day they have so the key is to try not to let yourself feel too bad about it.

Well, that IS adorable :) and we've all been there. Another thought is, please take advantage of a local processing place if you have one. It can be easier on you for two reasons: you don't have to do the deed and you know that professionals ARE. I always feel at ease when i take birds to the local place because this family does dozena a day in seasons, they are good at it.

I admit, I have a hard time not getting attached to my CX. Yes, they're kind of grotesque in their way, but they're also very personable and friendly. I have to work to remain distanced from them, cause they are definitely food. I've usually raised mine with my layer chicks, and since I don't treat any of my birds as pets it works okay for me.

I do go on the thinking of....they have a good life, and then one really bad day. But the slaughter part is as brief and humane as I can manage, then it's over and they're just meat.
