Hi all, my female silkie chick ("Butterscotch") has a gunky eye. It doesn't appear to bother her and she is otherwise completely normal and healthy, but it also doesn't seem to be improving after a few days with LA 200 a few times a day. Her poop is also particularly stinky, in case that might be related. She lives with other chicks and they don't have any issues. Any ideas on what it might be and how to treat it?

ps some of the yellow crusty stuff is probably the LA 200.

LA200 is a long acting cattle medicine or oxytetracycline antibiotic. It is meant to be given by injection once every 3 days. I would rinse her eye with saline or eye wash twice a day and apply a small dab of either Terramycin eye ointment or plain Neopsorin twice daily. I have no idea if the thread below is reliable, but in post they give a dosage recommended by a poultry professor of 0.2 ml per pound, and that would be given into the breast muscle every 3 days. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/miracle-la-200-dosage-and-vetrx-for-crd-treatment.631458/

Mycoplamsa gallisepticum (MG) can cause crusty drainage in an eye, eye bubbles, and swelling around the eye from a sinus infection. I would also rule out a peck injury.

Thank you so much. The LA 200 was recommended by the breeder and she told me to put a few drops in her eye a few times a day. I'm not sure if I am confident enough yet to inject her so I will get some saline and Neosporin and try that. Thanks.

It is not that hard to inject into the breast muscle. You would want to have the smallest possible needle 22-25 gauge and inject near the breast bone into the muscle 1/4 inch deep. Alternate sides every 3 days. Tylosin (tylan) powder for water from Jedds.com also will treat for MG. Dosage is 1 tsp per gallon of water for 5 days.

Thanks so much! I am new to chickens and I think I’ll have to get outside my comfort zone and start learning this stuff! So far, it looks like the neosporin is helping so I’ll see how that goes.
