I accidentally bought a 50lbs bag of feed with fish meal as an ingredient. Has. Anyone fermented a feed containing fish meal? Is it safe to do? All I've read is that it stinks but is that dangerous?

I have. I didn't have problems. I add fishmeal to my 16% grower to raise the protein for chicks and molters. But I have started to mix it in after it has fermented.

Any particular reason why you mix it in later?

Speaking out of turn here, but I'm guessing she adds it later to avoid the increased odor.

The main reason is I feed several age birds so I only add it for feeding the birds I want to have 18 or 20% protein.
16% grower mixed with 60% fishmeal at a 10:1 ratio gives 20% crude protein. The fishmeal makes a better limiting amino acid balance.
I mix FF in 5 gallon buckets for 6+ flocks of chickens. I don't always have enough chicks needing 20% protein.

Okay so I wanted to update. I started the ferment with fish meal Thursday AM. I gave them half of the old non fish meal and half of the new with fish meal and they took right to it. It seemed they liked it more! It does have a different smell a little stronger but it definitely ferments the bubbles that come up when I stir it are insane.

So I'll update again later but for now it's a success so yes you can ferment feed with fishmeal.

I also remember watching a show called an idiot abroad where I think he was in Japan and ate at this place that was apparently very expensive and the main thing they carried was a fermented fish. If I remember correctly it was really really old too. He said it was disgusting but the Japanese ate it and didn't die. So I think my chickens will be ok.

Final update on this. Everything is fine... so fermenting fish meal feed is ok to do. I've not noticed an egg problems or slowed production. They eat it and love it. It does have a different smell but it's not bad. I've not refreshed my ferment liquid either and it's still going strong.
