I just wanted to share my excitement. In early March we bought hen with 9 4 week old chicks. One unfortunately didn't make it. 2 turned out to be roosters and have since been rehomed, leaving us with hen and 6 chicks, which we watched grow up. Earlier this week I found the first egg - very exciting. This was followed by one egg per day the next 2 days, then no egg. Yesterday we had 2 eggs, one of which turned out to be a double yolker. This morning my daughter found 2 eggs - both shell-less, but hey, you can't have everything, and one chicken is sitting on the nest as we speak, so I'm expecting another egg a bit later.
I am amazed that multiple chickens seem to have started laying at the same time and that they are doing so in the middle of our Australian winter - first time chick raiser, so I didn't know what to expect.
Mind you, we suspect at least one of the 'chickens' is actually a rooster in disguise, but we are yet to figure out for certain which one.
