My husband and I are first time chicken owners. We have 6 ISA Browns, 2 Buff Orphingtons, and 2 Golden Comets. We also purchased 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes and 2 Barred Rocks. One of the black ones died the first night and we are not yet sure if it was the Barred Rock or Wyandotte. I suspect the latter. The chicks are now 2 weeks old. There is so much to learn but it is exciting.

As you have already received links to some good starting points, I will just wish you all the best.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

Thank you. I felt so helpless when we lost that little one. At just over 2 weeks I can't believe how they are flying around the brooder. Do you really have to clip their wings. I'm apprehensive about doing it. I'm afraid of hurting them.

i have clipped wings but it didnt deter my chicken from flying over the fence

so i havent done it again since
i have also taken the fence down as they would always find their way out but never back in

Aww I am so sorry you lost a chick. Sometimes they are just so weak and there is nothing we did wrong. It just happens sometimes. I am glad the others are doing well and trying to fly out of the brooder on you. "make a cover so they can't fly out of it." 2x2's with netting over it so light and air get in will work or hardware cloth. Stapled to the 2x2's work perfectly.

Congrats on your new flock. Best wishes to you.
