We've gone to great lengths to build a good habitat for our chickens. They will be delivered in about two weeks and we've been working on their coop/pen for a while to make life easy for them. We are only getting laying hens, no roosters and we have only 5 hens coming. We don't want to sell eggs or make profit off them, we just want fresh eggs. Later, down the road, we may consider more but for now this is a start. Actually, we are considering Cornish Hens and slaughtering in seven weeks..perfect.

The pen is on the very back side of our backyard and we are doing our best to keep it predator proof. We have fox, bobcat, owl, hawks, coons and many other predators, so doing what we can to keep them safe. The pen is totally enclosed with buried wire. We will have a bit more done before delivery but this is our start...

We are going to plant grape vines for shade and in the alternative at first we will install shade cloth. We live in the Deep South and don't need great coops.....need ventilation in the summer months...
