We are new to raising chickens. We bought 3-3month old chickens about 3 weeks ago and they have been fine. Just this morning we found 2 dead. We are very upset about this. Do you think the dirt ground was too damp for them. I've been doing some research and read that dirt is not good for them. Someone suggested crushed limestone or construction sand. We need to do something fast. Help! Irene

jees...sorry for your loss,it's tough...question-were your chickens vaccinated/healthy from where you got them????...also-do they have a place to roost on,up off the floor?? where are they sleeping?

We had a log for them and a perch, but they didn't want to stay on it for long. We have an open coop with dirt floor.

hmmmm...we had logs-mine hated them, would not go near it!what we did was, we have on old small table, about roughly 3 feet high? like a kids table...and we put a sheet of plywood (-about 3-4 feet )on it,screwed it into the top of the table...they love it.they jump up there atnight and plus it keeps their feet warm...we also did the same thing with an old microwave cart..we tookthe smaller top part off,and just used the bottom half with the doors(2 birds with one stone...a roost and storage!)-attached plywood to the top-idk about a 3-4 foot piece...same thing-no probs, they even occasionally go up there during the day.
