Is it a good idea to use sawdust in the goose brooder?

I have sackfuls of the stuff as we chop our own wood for our log burner.

I use it in the chicken coop, but they are all adults. I'm not sure if goslings would try and eat it and be ill, also it is not sterile.

I will be putting my 3 precious first ever goslings that I have incubated in to the brooder later today when they have fluffed up.

i personally wouldn't use it, but i am no expert. I have heard of babies raised on super fine bedding having breathing problems later in life.

Plus they may eat it and get impacted. I'd go with old clean towels or rubber shelf liner. both can be taken out shaken and washed and reused.

I think I may put an old towel over the top of the sawdust tomorrow, they are all settled for the night now.

My breeder (who has 70 years of experience with raising geese) says no sawdust until they're about three weeks old. They may eat it, and it may cause respiratory problems and eye infections. He says to use straw or towels.

I don't see putting a towel over the sawdust as a safe solution. As soon as the goslings start exploring the world, they'll get to the sawdust underneath within minutes.
