Same here.Mine also ignore ants.![]()
Only some chickens in my flock ignore them. The rest happily dig up the anthills and eat away.Same here.
I feel sorry for the orphaned roosterOk so, everything I said earlier about the black rooster not coming into my yard, forget that. I was sitting on the building ramp watching the chicks dig around and the adults pacing along the exterior mad they cannot get to the chick food. Bubba and Randy are both in sight and they start letting off their low growls/whines. I ignore them, figure they are growling at each other since they are sort of close to each other and in my opinion at the time still do not like each other. Actually I am ignoring everyone but the chicks to be honest. Randy growls again, this time louder and closer to me so I look to see what he is looking at. Low and behold the Black Rooster is in the ditch in my yard making his way to a hen. I will still say Randy and Bubba may not like each other, but they can work together and do it extremely well. When he got within a foot of one of the Maran girls they pounced and hit him from both sides. The poor boy did not expect it and neither did I. Randy ran him halfway up the hillside before running back into the yard. He and Bubba then had a synchronized crow off like Bubba and Branch used to do. I hate to say it because the black rooster was run off but I am proud of both boys. That is progress. Progress I have been hoping to see between those 2. I got up and grabbed a coffee can to go get the flock a special treat of some of the chick feed that the girls desperately want. Randy has learned what the coffee can means as well. He was right with the girls that followed me hot on my heels. I tried to get him to eat out of my hand, but that still will not fly with him. Sigh, I keep telling myself I do not need a game rooster. It will not work long term with my goals for my flock. Dang it Randy, he keeps proving he is everything a game rooster should not be and everything a good rooster for a multi-boy flock is.
My feelings as well, but I’m not there to judge the situations as they occur. He’s just a rooster who wants a home. Sad in life we don’t get what we want sometimes.I feel sorry for the orphaned rooster![]()
I do too. You know, the first few days Bubba was determined to run off Randy. Now that he knows about my yard maybe I will have a better shot of taming him. Now though I do have a huge problem. I will not keep both boys. I do not want to keep both boys. I have my own goals and desires for the boys in my flock and these unfortunate strays throw a wrench into it. I WANT and hopefully will have a silkie rooster. If all 6 silkie chicks are girls, I doubt it, but if they are I will end up buying a boy. After Bubba is gone the thought has been there to go to his breeder next fall when he sells his grow outs and buy another Marans boy. It was never in the cards for a game rooster or even a Australorp rooster, yet here I am. I am beginning to really like Randy. I also feel I should not have to change or throw out my goals and plans because of idiots who have turned the barn into a dumping ground for chickens.I feel sorry for the orphaned rooster![]()

Good job Randy. You too Bubba!Ok so, everything I said earlier about the black rooster not coming into my yard, forget that. It is very sad. Heartbreaking really. The poor fellow probably did nothing wrong but get hatched to the wrong people.I feel sorry for the orphaned rooster![]()
You should not have to take responsibility for others irresponsibility. You need to manage your chickens to your plans. Hopefully for their sake you can help them out. But if you can't that's a hard fact of life.I do too. You know, the first few days Bubba was determined to run off Randy. Now that he knows about my yard maybe I will have a better shot of taming him. Now though I do have a huge problem. I will not keep both boys. I do not want to keep both boys.
