flying out of their area

Very interesting that you ask this. When I first got chickens, I read that the type of Hens I have are not good fliers. 4 feet seemed to be the right height. Well now I just spent the afternoon raising the fencing up another 2 feet because i have a few escape artists. Moral of the story is, 6 feet seems to be the right height unless you have a breed that are really good fliers. I have seen thread about hens that can roost in trees! Then you have to cover the area.

6' fencing is not a option at the present, have standard field fence now.
Has anyone tried flight feather clipping, as in parrots???

We clip all our birds as a matter of course, as they MUST stay in the pasture (neighbor's garden is less than 10' away from our pasture fence). If you're used to clipping parrots, you'll probably have to be more severe than clipping a parrot. We take all the flights off both wings, otherwise they are over our 4' fence easily. For light bodied birds like our white Leghorns and Red Sex Links, we take all the flights and most of the secondaries. Just use a pair of scissors to cut them off just below the coverts.
