I want to put a fence around the whole coop and run so my babies can free range, but not have access to the whole yard.. How high can chicks fly? Would a 3 foot fence be tall enough?

They can easily clear a 3' tall fence by week 4 or so...

If it's a small enough area, maybe try some netting over your intended area, but keep an eye out.

I have a 6 foot fence and netting over their entire coop. I want nothing flying in, and I don't want them flying out. Would I clip there wings?? Not sure. I would if there was a good reason too.

Even my big girls can clear a 3 foot fence easy...my replacement flock of Welsummers could clear it at 4 or 5 weeks.

I will say this about my flock, the best thing I ever did was open the run and let the girls forage in the whole yard. I get more eggs than we can use, I'm spending less money on feed, and the girls are much much happier.

I clip my hens' wings. Just one wing on each bird. keeps them in their area (1 acre) that is surrounded by 6 foot tall fencing.
Cannot put netting over it because it's in the woods.
My pullets are in their large run, 6 foot fencing with netting overhead.
When they move in with my big girls, they will have their wings done as well.
I clip their wings for their own safety as we work all day and if they hopped the fence, there would be NO protection for them outside their area.

Your birds get to roam 1acre of ground?

    That's awesome....
