8 ducklings hatched under mama duck on Wednesday. They have all been very active and eating their parents pellets that we've crushed up(Purina Layena blue bag). They have been waddling all over with mama right with them. Daddy guards the door to the pen and sometimes scoots the ducklings under the coop when people walk too close. Before church Sunday(today), we noticed that one duckling was by itself and not moving. We have it inside in a box with food and water. It does not seem to want to eat or drink. It can move its head and wings just fine. It just seems to be the feet that can't move. It's as if they are limp or paralyzed. All the other ducklings are fine. Does this sound familiar to anyone? We are not sure if it may have gotten trampled or something, but we only have two ducks, one drake, and the eight ducklings in the yard... which is completely enclosed even on top. Can anyone help us out?

Welcome to BYC, first off Laying feed isn't suitable for ducklings too much calcium, it's for helping layers form strong shells on their eggs, the ducklings need an all flock feed or chick feed. or duckling feed, you may want to start by giving this lil one some niacin dissolved in it's water, niacin dif can cause lameness and neurological problem in water fowl if fed chicken feed because it's formulated for chickens and water fowl need more niacin than what is in it. Most of us can't get water fowl feed so we have to use chick feed and supplement with niacin. you'll need to find plain niacin 150 megs crushed and dissloved into a gallon of water then place that into the waterer, all the ducklings can drink this even the parents it won't hurt them, we don't know why sometimes it may only be 1 duckling out of a hatch that it affects but it happens pretty regularly. But needs to be treated ASAP, now this may not even be the problem it could be something it was born with a defect of the heart or another internal organ, but I'd try the niacin. will it eat at all/ and is it drinking? if it's eating you can also sprinkle Brewers yeast over it's feed at 1 tab to half cup of feed. or nutritional yeast but not baking yeast.

Thank you for your help. We will have to see about the chick food. Unfortunately, that was not the issue in this case. We just witnessed the drake attcking another duckling. Our other duckling died in a matter of 6 hours after becoming lame. Mean ol dad. We are moving mom and ducklings into another pen right now.
