They are not show Rocks but they are a couple of generations removed from hatchery Rocks and an improvement on that, I believe. Here is Dutch, my main breeder roo. His body type is very broad, nothing like the hatchery's slim-bodied Rocks I've seen so much. I try to stay with the proper type, but I would never pretend mine are show quality. The pullet pic is representative of the hens I have, most of them, anyway. She is Dutch's half sister-same sire.

I'll admit, they're barring and body style is MUCH better than the hatchery stock.

Unfortunately, they wouldn't stand a chance in the show arena, but still VERY nice birds and very healthy and happy!

I've never cared about the show arena whatsoever. My focus is to have a decent BR type with good egg production not being compromised. In the future, I may get some eggs from Dick Horstman's stock, but for now, mine are just fine for me. They have a temperament that is just awesome, even my roosters. That is more important to me than show barring.

Sorry, but part of the show is having a good temperament too.

If I have a rooster that attacks, I DQ. Hands down. If the owner doesn't want to spend time working with it...why should I? That's the way I see it.

BR SHOULD be somewhat good egg-layers, but being a dual-purpose breed they will never be as good as Leghorns or as good as Sex-links. It's just not in their make-up.

I know that temperament is a component in the show ring, however, I just meant that if I had to pick between a bird with perfect conformation or a wonderful temperament and personality, I'd pick the friendly, easy to handle bird every time. Hopefully, both those things can be found in the same bird. As far as laying, my BRs have been excellent layers, equal to my Rhode Island Reds. Cant do better than an egg a day, right?

I hope you find a good home for CJ. Have you tried your local Craigslist?

See, part of the characteristics for ME is a nice docile demeanor in Barred Rocks. Or any Rock for that matter.

If it ain't calm, then it ain't going to be my breeding stock. If it attacks...but has good colors...I'll wait till I have a replacement cock from him...THEN eat him!
