Began learning about chickens, (rather by accident) earlier this year. In central Minnesota so winter climate is the 1st challenge to deal with. Still haven't figured out an option for the forthcoming "daily" frozen waterer issue that I know is coming.

Input from others in these cold northern climates would be greatly appreciated.

If you have electricity available...we use a plug in dog waterer.

If you're handy and have power, it's not difficult to buy the innards of a lamp for a few bucks and mount a light in a metal cookie tin or similar. then set the waterer on top.

Do you hace power in your coop?

I do have electricity available to the hen house. I looked at some horse or pig or goat heated waterers but they didn't seem to be the right fit for how chickens drink water. I did not think of the heated dog waterer. I'll take a look at it.

As far as a light bulb in a metal case under ther waterer, I may try that as well. But; I've had some nasty encounters with somthing leaking and coming into contact with the live electrical current.

from Ohio. TSC sells the heated bases that you just place your water font on top. They work great.
