I got my girls on Monday, one has laid 3 times, the other two not yet.
What I find odd is that they had no interest whatsoever in the celery I tossed to them, or the cantaloupe, or the ears of corn. I thought they'd really go for those things!!
Could it be because maybe they were never given them before?
I bought them from an old farmer who had zillion chickens running around, maybe he never fed them anything but chicken feed???
They eat the feed I give them just fine, and busily scratch around on the ground, but totally ignore the fresh veggies....???

They've probably never seen veggies before. Give them time, they'll probably come around. I'm new to chickens, but I've been through it many times before with horses, over time and with patience my horses always came around to apples and carrots. Good luck!

Nerfy,

Sorry it is off topic, but your TNR cats have me a bit intrigued. Does "trap neuter return" mean that you release them back to the wild (feral) once they have been neutered, or you give them homes with people? Can't say I'd be happy with the concept of releasing feral cats, but then we don't have native cats here.

Mine were like that to. But once they got up the nerve to try it, they loved it. There favorite treat is Saurerkraut, believe it or not ( Hope thats a ok for them) I rinse it really well and try to get out most of the salt. but they will eat anything now cause they have learned if it gets put in the pen its eatable. LOL

I think my chickens' fave fresh veggie is tomatoes. So you can imagine what happened to the cherry tomato plants...I saw a hen running from the garden with a green tomato in her beak and three hens chasing her. They looked like they were playing rugby!!! She dropped it, another grabbed it, and the chase continued.

Sooooo funny to watch...makes it worth the loss in the garden!!!

RainbowFlower - I can't speak for Nerfy but it's pretty popular here in the States to TNR feral cats and release them back into the wild or place them as feral cats to people who need rodent control for large properties or barns. It's not like in Australia where there is no native cat and have become a HUGE problem. As an animal lover myself, if I lived in Australia I would not be a friend of the cat or the rabbit. Hope that helps, if you have any more questions PM me. I LOVED Australia and hope to return one day.

I planted some flowers in a large plastic tub (I score them for free at work all the time! I just cut the bottom out so they can drain) yesterday, it was so nice just sitting out in their run planting while they clucked about and nibbled on them, thinking of putting some cherry tomatoes in there for them too....maybe kale....any suggestions on other things they love??
