Funky egg... What's wrong???

We have 3 RIR hens and 1 Buckeye. They are all 8 months.

I got an egg last week that was weird. I found it on the floor. It was covered with a thick, creamy substance. It was the normal size. When I cracked it open, it was normal on the inside: the yolk stood up, and the shell was hard.

I haven't gotten anymore of these eggs. What happened inside that hen that caused it???

possibly SUPER fresh... they do have this icky stuff on em whn they are laid... then it dries off. kinda like when a baby is born i guess ( i dont have kids so please no flaming or offense)

When our RIRs started laying I also found 1 egg that way. It was like it had a soft shell over a hard shell. Not for sure if that was what it was or not, never got another one like it.

Would it be safe to eat eggs like this if I get them again?
