Funny eating habits

I have three hens that I purchased from the local market as chicks. During their time with me, I have noticed that like no other chickens I have seen before, they are very difficult to feed. For example, they refuse to eat potatoes unless I season them with oil and herbs. Has anyone experienced this too?
