Cookie baking should not be this much of a multi-step process.

"Can I help make cookies?"
"No, I want it to get done quickly this time. Maybe next time."

Next sibling comes into the kitchen. "Can I help make cookies?
"Not this time, I need this to be done quickly and it will take too long if other people are helping. Maybe next time."

Next sibling comes into the kitchen.
"Can I-"
"Didn't you just hear my answer to Lumpy and Bunji?"
"Yes, but I thought maybe you would let *me* help, 'cause I'm bigger."
Yeah, by eight months. "No."

Then, the cookies come out of the oven.
"Can I have a cookie?"
"No, they're for after lunch."

"Can I have a cookie?"
"After lunch."

Bunji comes into the kitchen. "Can *I* have a cookie?"
"Why would I say yes to you when I just said no to Joshua and Mazie?"
"...I dunno."

Rinse, repeat! Rinse, repeat! If only I could write this off as deja vu.
