Our brooder is in the garage, the lamp is now outside of it just aiming in one corner at it’s highest point. The ducklings, 4 weeks old, dont seem to want it and are on the other side. Garage goes down to the mid-60s, outside is now mid-50s. Even on colder nights they seemed to not want it.

they have been outside swimming in cold mountain well water, in the low 60s For the past week.

Is it ok to turn off the lamp now?

Sounds like it’s totally fine to turn it off. If it would make you feel better, maybe check on them the first night or two to make sure they’re not huddling together/acting cold.

Four weeks is a little young, I would just try raising the lamp so it doesn't give off as much heat for now. The rule of thumb is to wait till they're fully feathered. Hope that answers your question. :)

Actually, as long as the garage stays in the 60s they really should be fine. Ducks are generally in more danger of overheating, even when young.

Thanks to all. I just moved the lamp farther away from the brooder. It still beams down on a sliver of it. It does seem to warm up the garage just being on. The garage is connected to the house which helps..but not with the smell 😖 But they’ve been getting used to living in the 60s. A hot day up here is 80.
