Hi all - I'm new to the forum and semi new to chickens. We got these 6 a couple weeks ago and the one has been acting a bit different. "She" (we were supposed to just have pullets) is an Ameraucana and we have one other of those too. This one in question has a pronounced red comb while the other doesn't. Both of the Ameraucana's are larger and feistier than the other chickens we got but this one with the comb seems to climb all over the other chicks and flap its wings a lot and be "bossy".

So what do you all think? The one I'm referencing is the lighter colored one in the front, center. "her" sister is behind her.

[SORRY! it won't let me post the direct pic since I'm new here so here's the link to the pic on Flickr]

Thanks!

I've had several EE's and I'd vote roo on this one. Really thick legs, comb is pretty red for a pullet. The EE pullets typically get a little pinkish once they start laying, but not this red for this age. Also, my pullets have very defined praying hands tail feathers, your bird looks more like soon to be rump feathers. Hard to see pea comb size, how many rows?

I am going to guess roo too, for same reasons as previous poster: When comparing to the others of the same age; The comb is definitely more colored. The legs are thick.

I copied and pasted the picture link. Here is my vote from left to right:

Buff Orpington - pullet
EE - pullet
Splash Laced Red Wyandotte - cockerel
Buff Orpington - pullet
Silver Laced Wyandotte - pullet (watch the comb - if it get pinker, it could be a cockerel)
Barred Rock - pullet (could also morph into a cockerel - watch the comb)

I have 2 splash blue laced red wyandottes and I am 99 percent sure their legs are not that gray slate color. I think that is a very handsome boy you have! Good luck!!

Thank you for all of the feedback!

@Forever Green - the comb appears to have 3 rows. I have no idea what this means

They were advertised as all layers so hopefully I don't end up with a bunch of roosters! I'm going to speak with the lady we got them from and see about exchanging for a pullet. No interest in breeding at this point, so we're trying to stick to just girls for now ;-)
