I have some Rhode Island Red hens as well as some chocolate cuckoo Orpingtons. My question is, if I put one of my extra chocolate cuckoo roosters over these hens will I get Sexlink or just mixed birds? Thanks

:welcome

A Chocolate Cuckoo rooster x Rhode Island Red hens will not make a Sexlink, all of the offspring will get the cuckoo gene.

If you reversed the cross, and did a RIR roo x CCO hens, that would be a Sexlink. Males would get the cuckoo gene, females would not.

Wait, isn't the chocolate color a sex linked recessive gene? So a chocolate father would give chocolate daughters but sons that are carrying it but not visible?

Youre both correct.
All chicks will be cuckoo.
Cockerels will be black cuckoo (split to chocolate)
Pullets will be chocolate cuckoo
