While I was trying to be careful not to, I have one perch that is slightly overlapping another. Are chickens smart enough (not that I doubt the intellect of my girls!) but are they smart enough not to get pooped on by someone else?

Yours might be smart enough, but mine definitely are not!

We have three roosts, staggered at 12" apart both high and wide.

If they slept on the front of the roosts, they'd be staggered out of the way of the ones above pooping on them. But no, they sleep on the sides as well, directly underneath the ones above, and they do end up with poop stains on them.

Mine aren't smart enough either and you'll have a really messy roost. I think I would try to adjust it.
