I conveniently had a chicken become broody last week.....a few days before my chicks were due to ship from Mypetchicken.com.
They shipped today. I'd like to put a few under this hen and try to see if she will take to them.
Any suggestions on how to go about that?

Thinking I'd sneak them under her around dusk when the chickens are sleepy and quiet.
Check back a few times before I go to bed....run back out first thing in the AM!

I'd be interested in knowing how it has turned out.....
I have a hen that seems to be going broody, and I plan to drive to the hatchery nearby and get a couple newly hatched chicks for her when I'm sure she's committed.

I have a broody hen that should be hatching out some chicks soon.

And when she does I will be trying to put a few of my hatchery chicks under her.

Never tried this before so I will definitely be following this thread.

Sneak them in around dusk/night time is the perfect time. We had a hen go broody, and she sat on eggs, though none were viable. We picked up 5 Jersey Giant chicks locally, slipped the eggs out, and the babies under her, and by the next day, she was a very proud mama.

This is her and those same little fluffy butts now, I'm amazed at how quickly they've grown! [IMG]

I've placed chicks under broodies several times and only didn't have success once. In that one situation the hen had only been broody for about a week. For most of my other broodies I've taken them out after dark and placed the chicks way underneath them. The chicks should settle down and usually "Mom" will starting clucking softly to them. Last year I gave my bantam Cochin Sally 12 hatchery chicks and she was a great mom!!

So, I went on a trip and while I was gone my brother took care of my chickens. I forgot to tell him to take out any new eggs and she built up a big pile.
I think all of the eggs are dead but I will candle them tonight to make sure. Anyway, I am going to try to give my seven chicks to her tonight.

    I will update y'all when I try.

Oh and I got Pic of week !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![IMG]
