Hi, I banded my two boys 1 week and 2 days ago. Everything is looking as it should, no swelling or redness or anything. I'm just curious if it would be beneficial to apply a wound care ointment or spray just to keep infection out. Specifically maybe Vetricyn and if so, what particular type?

I’ve only ever banded cows and one time I banded a goat. I never applied anything but I would keep an eye out for infection and they (thankfully) all went well. I recently banded two goats two days ago and same thing: I’m just keeping an eye out to ensure they’re good but I’m not applying anything.

You don't need to apply anything unless flies are a problem. Make sure the animals are up to date on their tetanus shots though. That is important. If they haven't been vaccinated for tetanus, get some tetanus antitoxin (not toxoid) and give it ASAP.

Just wanted to add, if you're banding them yourself double check that the testicles fully drop off and keep an eye on the area. Male goats can be cryptorchid, where 1 testicle does not drop down and stays in the body.

It can cause a whole mess of hormone issues/issues if you don't want babies. Hope everything goes well!

Dry, always keep everything dry
If you see dampness around the band use wonder dust or equivalent.
Banding is not normally a problem.

I have 30 years of goat experience if you need help.
