I have noticed several posts that mentioned golf balls in the nesting box. What is the purpose of this? Does it make the birds sit on them more or something?[IMG]

If there is a snake eating the eggs, it will eat the golf ball, and then can not digest it, and it will die.

2 uses that I know about

1- luring hens into the nestboxes to lay
    2- Breaking egg eaters

I'm sure others will have more info.

We used them to teach the hens where to lay. I didn't know about detering egg eaters....nice to know.

Will plastic easter eggs work? Or do they need to be harder, like a golf ball? Not sure if they would be able to break a plastic egg or not...plastic prob. wouldn't be good for them either?

Cool! Thanks! I think this is such a GREAT web-site, people are so helpful on here. And it's nice to chat with others that have the same hobby/interest and love for chicken. Most people I know think that I have fallen off my rocker because I have become chicken "OBSESSED"! Because I spend most my free time building a new run or making improvements to the coop. Or just chillin in my lawn chair with a glass of iced teaand a cigarette...sittin back and just watching my ladies free range. They don't get it. But oh-well, I have never been one to care what is thought about me anyways.

Plastic are fine if you have them for fake eggs. I turned a couple out of pine on my mini lathe and that works fine to. I tis just something to lure them in like hte others say.
