Hey all, I'm Amber. I just got my first chicks on Sunday, and they are now 12 days old. I have four Barred rock, and four EE. I have no idea what sex any of them are, but they are all cute as can be. We plan on getting a few ducks, turkeys, and more chicks in the spring. Any advice y'all can give me will be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to BYC, Amber. I'm glad you decided to join our flock. I've had both Barred Rocks and EEs over the years (still have EEs) and you have some hardy, consistent layers. Easter Eggers are my granddaughter's (pictured in my avatar) favorite chickens. She loves their colored eggs. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. What kind of chicks do you plan on getting in the spring?

I haven't decided what kinds of chicks I will add yet. I want to find some dual purpose birds. I've heard that Barred rock, and EE are not the best meat birds, so I would like to find some that will taste good and lay good. I want about 14-15 hens, and two Roos.

Barred Rocks are actually good meat birds, but EEs are typically a bit on the scrawny side. You might want to consider adding either some Black Australorps or Buff Orpingtons. The Australorps are the best layers of the dual purpose breeds and have a decent amount of meat on them, but the Buff Orpingtons are good layers as well and are a little larger than most of the other dual purpose breeds. Both of these breeds are very calm and gentle. My children, and now my granddaughter, made lap pets of them. Whatever breed you decide to add, good luck with your flock.
