Good Sanitation - Listeria Outbreak

Happens to the big boys all the time unfortunately. They eviscerate with a vacuum suction tool, poop splatters everywhere when they do it. And then the unrinsed birds go into a bleachwater/fecal-soup bath for up to 6 hours. "Outbreak" connotes a pattern of many people being ill, but these companies regularly cause unreported or untracked food borne illnesses across the us, Canada, and mexico. Campylobacter, salmonella, staphylococcus, and listeria to name a few of the common ones. Several of the food borne illnesses that are spread through chicken factories are strains that are newly resistant to antibiotics because of the rampant antibiotic use in commercial chicken feeding regimens. Antobiotic resistant yeast infections directly caused by contaminated chicken have been common since the 80's. Never gets reported and those contaminated products rarely get recalled anymore. Bleh.

Exactly the reason to raise our own meat. No home processed bird could compete with the commercial processors in the filth department.

This deserves a vomit reaction 🤢

It's about market forces!
Most people in the USA are far from their food supplies, and expect groceries that grow in packages at the market to be as inexpensive as possible. So meat processing plants are staffed by folks who aren't paid well, and production lines are moving faster all the time, ignoring worker health and safety. Slaughter plants are very dangerous places to work, and worse with Covid19.
We know that it's not possible to raise poultry or eggs and compete on price with commercial operations!
When testing is done, something like 80% of chicken at the store is contaminated with some bacteria or other! :sick
Rant over, again.

X's 2! I am so happy to be raising my own chickens again! When we get chicken from the store, we handle it like it is radio-active! Cut on a separate plastic cutting board, which goes in the dishwasher ASAP, with dedicated knives. This is also how I process my own. I agree, we are not competing with Tyson on price, that's for sure.:hmm
I buy whole chicken when I buy them, more processing in their plant = more chance to infect the food. Those recalls are all highly processed, de-boned or shredded/chopped. :sick:sick
