I have a nice pair of Sebastopol geese, lately my gander has been quite aggressive (chasing me off, biting and even scratching me with his nails) he's never done this and is usually SOOO friendly. I seen them mating in a puddle the other day. They are free range, today however the hen is going out into the long grass throwing grass on her back and behind her, then they walk to an old building on the property and spent about 5 minutes there, then went to the nest box I wanted them to use and spent 5 minutes there, then wandered off eating grass again? So I guess my question is: is this normal nesting behaviour? She's only 1 year... Isn't she too young? Does this mean she will be laying eggs soon... If so... When Aprox? This is my first time with geese so any help or guidance will be very appreciated:)

Hey there, she's not to young because all geese lay in their first spring.
And your gander will only be aggressive for breeding season and when the she has goslings.
It's very normal for him to do that but it's up to you to stand your ground ;)
Sounds like she's looking for a nesting site so keep a close eye on her and make sure she doesn't nest out in the open as she will be a easy target for predators.
They will lay if there's a lot of straw or hay in or around the nesting box :)

thanks for the info :) I put lots of hay in their "nest box" and it's about four or five feet long and probably 3 feet deep. They went in there a couple times today and they went into an old chicken coop. I locked them in for the night :)
