Got a 5 month old rooster, now the hens are chaing him and beating up him! :(

    I have not had a roo the entire 1.5 years I have had girls...lost one earlier this month to a hawk....was given a BEAUTIFUL rooster, 5 months old.....he is terrified of the hens! :( I hope he will grow up and become a man shortly...lol....he's not a protector when they are after him in the yard! :( Advice?

    That is still pretty young. Right now, he is at the bottom of the pecking order, because he is new. I just added a rooster myself. What I did was, I put him in my storage room, which is right beside the main room in my hen house. They can see eachother, but they can't peck eachother. After I was sure he was healthy, then I let them free range together, and that way, he could escape from them if they attacked. Now, after time, he's been accepted and everything's going well, with just an occasional peck here and there. Soon, he'll be bigger than all the hens, so then he'll be in charge.....
