I went to a new petstory yesterday, 1-13-2010. and they sell pheasants... the male Lady Amherst I have is 1 year old, they had a 2 year old male for sale and I decided to buy him for my hens. I watched him in his cage and he seemed cheerful, hoping around, eatting food, walking and doing his thing. They caught him for me and I examined him and he had no bugs and looked good.

the petstore does not have any kind of warranty... SO I took a chance and bought him.

I took him home and he looks sad... THis morning he still looks sad,

I also bought a Male Red Golden thats 2 years old... the red golden looks great, he ajusted JUST FINE.. but the Lady looks sad still, is this normal... should i worry,,, do I LEAVE him alone, what do you all recommend.

Is he in with other birds?I have never heard of pet stores selling pheasants, and I'm sure you paid a lot for him.I would give him a dose of terrimycin or duramycin which ever you have.It wouldn't hurt to give it to all your birds.Wait a week or so then give them all a wormer.(this should be done at least 2 times a year). Then wait another week and give them all cranberry juice for a day or two. Then continue with normal watering. You can house male pheasants together as long as there are no hens around, but you need to put both birds into a new pen.

yes... my Lady is with the two hens... they dont pay him much attention... When I got home I notice him pirched on the tree... he's still pirched there... probly gonna roost there tonight... i will follow your advice and see what happens... this is the 1st time ive ever recived a sad bird...

Id understand if both the red golden and lady were acting the same... but there not... The red is also with the females, but he explores, is active and seems to be chipper... Guess he is happer with two females instead of one... [IMG]

Tomorrow when I get home, Ill give both males a doce of terrimycin, then the wormer a week later, and then try the cranberry juice.... I hope he's just stressed out.... hope he makes it.

It very well could just be stress. Or he may be sickly. Do just as Tony advised, and you should be fine.... Hope it all works out for you.

Tony, Why cranberry juice? I've never heard about using it on birds. Does it function as a vitamin supply or for its ut and respiratory benefits? If it works for humans, hmmm I might have to try that.
