Living on a mountaintop outside the city is a great place to be. Growing up my Grandma always had chickens. At an early age I acquired the taste for fresh farm eggs. I don't care what all the advertising says. Store-bought eggs taste like store-bought eggs. I am looking forward to having fresh eggs here. My "backyard" consists of eight acres. So I decided there was no time like the present to start my backyard flock.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. I don't suppose you could be atop " Lookout Mountain." I remember traveling to Florida many years ago and kept seeing signs for Lookout Mountain and never got to see it.

No, I'm on Signal. During the Civil War the soldiers signaled movements of the troops in Chattanooga from Signal Mountain over to the soldiers on Lookout Mountain. Too bad you never stopped along your way to see Lookout Mountain & Chattanooga. The views and people are fantastic! Great place to live.

You're spot on about the difference between store-bought and backyard eggs (and we know which ones are best, don't we [IMG]). With that much acreage, I'd be a dangerous person. What breed of chickens are you going to start with?

    Thanks for joining us!

I'm starting out with 4 light bantams and 4 black sex links. I got the chicks last week from a local breeder. She was very helpful and told me to call her anytime I have any questions. They are doing well. Just like all chicks: eatin' and poopin'. Poopin' and eatin'. They are definitely putting out some good stuff for the composite pile.
