    Hello all,

Grew up in Oregon, spent 20 years in Alaska, and moved back to Oregon last fall.

Had hundreds of chickens, ducks, geese, and guineas when I was a kid/teenager on the farm and have finally moved to a place where chickens are allowed and the landlord actually welcomes a tenant who uses the property.

    (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Kept chickens in my youth, but my wife and kids are new to the bird thing.

    (2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We have two- Americana rooster and hen. The rooster was supposed to be dinner along with two others I got off craigslist, but my daughter fell in love with him and I am now forbidden from eating him. The other two were already in the pot before she got home from school. Then hen is another CL freebie. She has a lame leg and was being picked on by the other ladies in her former flock. She enjoys the attention the kids give her and is laying about 5-6 eggs a week. We plan on building a tractor and getting another 10-15 birds in the next few weeks. Would also like to raise broilers in the future once we get a freezer.

    (3) What breeds do you have?

Americana/Auracana - want to add Roadies or other such layers to the flock this spring.

    (4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Link on Mother Earth News website.

    (5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Rabbits, beekeeping, fishing, hiking, gardening, a good book and cooking.

    (6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

Welcome to BYC from California wine country in the Western Sierra Foothills!

Personally, I'm glad the rooster is safe... I wouldn't have a flock without roosters... That is, I want 'em in the flock, and so I do. They have such interesting personalities, especially when interacting with their hens. I can't keep more than two roosters but I cheat and have a third.... A silkie. Yeah, he crows and I can tell each rooster's crow, but my neighbors can't. Hehehehehe.

I love Oregon, having lived on the coast with my grandmother during formative years.
