It has been 30 years since I have had the pleasure of keeping chickens. Now that I am on an off grid permaculture homestead I want to have chickens again! We have an outbuilding we want to convert into a chicken coop. There is a very large cedar tree next to it. Is that going to be a problem for the chickens? any toxicity issues etc? I am hoping it will create some much needed shade in the hot summer. Thanks... I am so excited!!!

Hello and :welcome
The tree should be no problem, it should actually be good for the shade. We've got all manners of trees around the coop, and the chickens don't pay much attention to any of them.

The cedar tree is fine. The problem with cedar and chicks is when you use cedar chips/sawdust as bedding. Cedar has a toxic odor to chicks, I think.

Ahhhh thank you... I shall keep that in mind for the chicks. May have to research it a bit.
