HELP!! My girl has a crop issues! We have emptied her crop several times over the last two days! It also has the horrible smell which tells me she has a yeast infection too. The problem is that the crop now feels like it is has grit the size of a tennis ball. I don't know what to do from here to try to help her! I've read so much I honestly haven't read anything that deals with the grit in the crop that is so full! I understand the grit is to move to the gizzard with the food to grind it up but this is making her miserable. She was my nosy one who was the first to be by my side when I was working with them and now she doesn't even show up when I'm around them. Her comb is laying over and her little eyes just look weak. I am trying to make sure she stays hydrated. First year raising chickens! Please help!!!!

Hi there, welcome to BYC! :frow

What is the age of your girl and where did she come from?

What makes you think it's grit. Is she pooping? What are you feeding on a regular basis including treats and supplements?

:fl
Hi!
She is 5 months old. My daughter bought them from Tractor Supply because she thought they were so cute and was going to give them to my brother, who has chickens but I got attached to them so here we are!

Ok so now I'm thinking more here after your questions! That could be the crumbs settled in the bottom of her crop. The last two mornings there were two very small droppings on the poop board. I am feeding here crumbles and not pellets! I have been giving them one of the following several afternoon, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, apples, watermelon and corn on the cob! The ground in the run is covered with sand from the local landscape company, the ground here is a bit clay like. Have given random oyster shell and grit, sometimes the grit mixed with their food. (I just bought corner feeders to put one on each corner for the grit and shell.)

I am 100% of the yeast because of the smell. Trying to figure that treatment also!

She also jerks her head as if something is stuck in her throat.

Some folks add raw apple cider vinegar to the water.. or acidified copper sulfate. Alternatively Nystatin type cream.

Could be, they don't have a gag reflex and shaking the head is how they clear things. I wouldn't think doing an epsom salt flush would dislodge anything physical.. but it MIGHT clear the system of sludge adding to the sour part of the crop?? Please use YOUR best judgement. Glad you understood my questions were about getting you thinking and NOT indicating a lack in confidence of your thought. :hugs

So glad you fell in love with chickens! Hope you get more help, I've never dealt with this yet. :fl

Thank you so much! I will keep working with her. I'm going to pull her out of the coop in the day and let her sleep in there at night. That is the best way for me to see her poop output.
