What brands and what are some called?

My local ranch / live stock feed store doesn't have it... which I find interesting... but all I searched for was "grit"...?

Will river sand do the trick as well, if I just buy a bit of that?

It should be near the chicken feed, but if they don't carry it, I'd order it online, myself. River sand is better than nothing but the granite used for grit is a lot harder and has larger pieces. If they will be on soil and free range some, they may get all they need from your soil, depending on what it it like.

Check with your local landscaping supply company for crusher run. If you could get a shovelful or two, the fines will provide you with lots of grit. You won't need the larger stones in the mix, but the small pieces will serve your purpose.
