Growing Gourds up the run

I got a later start than I would have liked, and it took some work to figure out how to get the chickens to stop eating the shoots, but the birdhouse gourds are finally growing. In my area, they have until late November until harvest. Soon I will have to add hammocks for the bigger ones, which I'll make out of old t shirts.

Love the idea! I did the same with lemon cucumbers and planted them a couple feet away from the run wall, then trained the vines with bailing twine staked to the ground near the cukes and attached to the top of the run so the vines got ahold of the run several feet off the ground, keeping them away from the chickens while they took hold to grow up & over the wall.

I also found that (my) chickens don't eat the squash bugs that found the cukes :(
