Growling Rooster

I have a large BLack Giant Rooster.
when I go in the coop at feeding times he will walk around and emit this loud growling noise.
He is never agressive, but when he's behind you and you hear what sounds like a large coon growling it is rather unsettling.
What is he saying?

That's his "warning" call to his ladies.

I kinda thought maybe it was a display of fear or warning sound. Thing is he is never agressive, and has nothing to fear from me. I am in and outa there all the time, he should be used to it. Plus, I am feeding them.

Sometimes they just do that for fun. I have a roo that will do that even when no hens are present.

We joke that he thinks he's a pirate, sometimes he makes this "ARRGH" sound.
