i bought recently for my birds a baby/chicken monitor at the store because i was woried about the coop being so far up the hill and me not being able to know what they are up to in case of an emergancy.

ive noticed this before that when i'm in the coop my lovey has this strange habit of screaming wildly, it wasent till i was listining to him on the baby radio that i found that he dose this A LOT. he makes this god awfull angry screaming his poor lungs out growling sound.

is this something that sould concern me or is he just being the rooster?

chicken language anyone?

Mrs. Fluffy Puffy :

I've had a rabbit that would growl at me, but never a chicken! Is he trying to crow maybe? Do you have any other roosters in there with him?

no he knows how to crow and he is defanately the only boy in the coop, oddie was moved out with my rocks last nov and dec stingray had a litter of eggs, one of my hens was brooding underneath the nesting shelf out of view, sneaky lady. i got a couple of bared rock roos so pam might be taking oddie to the city house, if she dose i want to name my new rooster butter bars. lol.

It's a warning call to all the gals that there's a predator near. (or what he thinks is a predator)

i'd hope thats not the case.

Yeah, that's it. When a rooster hears or sees something that troubles him or the girls (can be anything from an actual predator, to a butterfly, to a car) he lets lose a growl, formally called a 'hawk'. A rooster can hawk in the daylight or at night. It's just a warning. Sometimes mine will make the noise even if I don't see or hear anything. Unless you suspect that you have night-visitors, I wouldn't worry. It only means you have a good roo.

Yep.. Perfectly normal.. My husband was out with me the other day and I had the babies free ranging.. When my husband approached the coop 3 out of my 4 roos started doing this.. Guess they thought he was a mild threat or something.. But none of them "ran for the hills".. I did find out today that my primary rooster will "buk buk buk bugawk!" over and over until a BIG threat goes away like he did today when the neighbors dog got out of the yard and was either just curious or was thinking of sunday lunch! But, But, i went out there, chased the dog off and Clucky settled down...
