thank you so much that's a lot of help! And unfortunately there's no vets nearby that care for chickens by me I'd much rather have that. It would make sense that it would be from an infected pecking wound because I unfortunately have a temperamental hen and she's at the bottom of the order. She doesn't pick on her constantly but I wouldn't be surprised if she did.Is vet care an option?
She has more than one swollen area. The cause is hard to know. Impacted feather follicle(s), abscess or tumors come to mind. The one at the vent, possibly an infected pecking wound, but still don't know.
The areas with scabs probably need to be debrided and you dig around and see if there is a curled up feather in there. Squeeze out any hardened pus if there is any. It's better to have a vet do this.
Chlorhexidine or betadine would be better to use than epsom salts for cleaning the wounds if you dig around in them.
