Hi,

Our ex-battery rescue hen has been with us for around a year (aged between 3/4 years) and the last few days we’ve noticed that she has a number of yellowish growths on her neck and around her leg (pictures attached). Does anyone have any idea what these are? She has been picking at the lump in her leg with her beak. She also has very runny poo and is still eating her food but feels lighter than previously.

Thanks

Welcome to BYC. A vet might be of help in diagnosing the nodules. Ingrown feather cysts could be a possibility, but 2 viruses in chickens, avian lymphoid leukosis and Mareks disease can cause tumors on the inside and outside of the body. If you should lose her, it would be good to have your state vet perform and necropsy to look for one of those. If you are in the US, here is a list of the state vets to contact:

Thanks so much for your reply. We took her to the vets a couple of days ago who prescribed iodine and antibiotics. They suggested that it is most probably ingrown feather cysts as you mentioned. Back to the vets next week to have them treated - so hopefully clears up soon!
