Not sure of sex or breed. Any idea?
Looks like a barred Plymouth Rock to me. It's young but I'd say pullet.
Ya it's a barred Plymouth Rock. I have one of my own and he is beautiful! I love him to death, but barred Plymouth rocks have a bad attitude, they aren't the best chickens in the world
So funny you say that because he/she is a fiesty chicken! Not near as friendly as the little naked neck I have in with it. Thanks for the input. I really hope they both turn out to be hens as I am already quite attached. I guess I should post pictures again for you in a few weeks?
I say BR cockerel. Rooish face and thick legs.
That may be your experience, but it's by no means universal. Barred Rocks have been the backbone of my flock for the last 6 years and I've never had any "attitude" problems, from the hens or roosters.
The bird in question looks rooish to me, but may not be pure barred as the color seems kind of dark.
I think it may be a mixed breed. I got it from a lady who was breeding all sorts. I'll take more pictures in a couple weeks.
I was afraid it was a he.
Barred rock pullet. Or just for a gee wiz what would a cuckoo maran look like at this age?
Not a Cuckoo Marans...Marans have white or even light grey-white legs, this bird's legs are clearly yellow.
Also, the patterning is clear barring and not the "messy" blurring of the cuckoo pattern.
Likely Barred Rock or as Donrae said a mix as it doesn't look quite right for color....and I'm thinking roo. Very upright stance and while you didn't mention the age, but I'm guessing about 2 to maybe 3 weeks? That's the start of good comb growth already.
