Newbie to the forum and to Guineas.

We will be getting month old guineas but wasn't sure on necessary housing. My sister coops her's with the chickens so she couldn't really help. We are in East Texas and normally our winters never get below freezing and if they do only for short stretches.

Do guineas need a 4 walled coop like a chicken or would they do well with a 3 sided coop and a fenced run to protect against predators?

Also a newbie to the forum and guineas! [IMG]

We have keets that just turned 2 weeks and we are starting to drum up plans for our coop too! We live in North Texas (similar enough climate),so I figured I'd tag a long on your thread in hopes for some good info. [IMG]

I don't think most people use a run with them, but of course you can if you want. Usually they are considered a free range bird, and for a good reason. Not only so they can eat ticks and watch/alert for predators, but because they do a lot of running and flying and need a lot of space. I keep mine in a four walled coop with my chickens but a three walled one should work fine where you are. Many people let them sleep outside in the trees but I have lost a lot that way when they were being jerks about going into the coop at night and I gave up and let them sleep in the trees. After six were killed in a couple nights the remaining five said screw that and ever since then they run into the coop every single night. Whatever happened scared them straight. lol

I'll add to make the coop as large and tall as possible. They squabble over roost space a lot.
