Happy New Year to all, I am Brian from Manchester PA. I am in the planning stage for a coop and picking what breeds we will keep. I have enjoyed the information from this site! While I am posting, would anyone know of a good place to find quality hens in Central Pennsylvania? Thank you, Brian
Hello and welcome to the flock! You can check out your state's thread on this forum: Where am I? Where are you! There you might be able to find info more specific to your geographical location
Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. There are some great quick reference charts at http://albc-usa.etapwss.com/images/uploads/docs/pickachicken.pdf, http://www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/breed-list.aspx, and http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html to aid you in researching the breeds. Also Murray McMurray has an excellent "chick selector" tool at https://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html to help you select the best breed (or hybrid) for you. Just be sure and click on "show more characteristics." If you are not objectionable to hybrids, I would suggest Black Sex Links (Black Stars). They are friendly, hardy, and readily available egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your coop built and in getting your flock.
