Hello, I hope someone can help me. We have a hen who is around 3 years old, in the past week or so we noticed she seems a bit under the weather - still eating and drinking fine, wandering around the run etc but sitting down a lot more. We thought she might be egg bound so gave her a warm bath however when we got her in the water there was a large lump on her abdomen. The lump is hard and quite large, running from around her breast bone to just before her vent. This skin was also scabby and the feathers matted - presumably because she has been sitting down so much. It doesn't hurt her to touch or try and move it (although it wont move far) it feels as though it is under the skin rather than in her gut.

Any ideas what this could be and how we can help her? Other than looking a little glum she seems to be coping fine, eyes bright, comb fine, poos normal. She has funny legs which cause her knees and feet to turn inwards - something she has had from birth- could this be related to the lump? We lost our cockeral due to an impacted crop recently so would really like to be able to save this one! The other chicken, who is nearly 5 is perfectly healthy.

Any advice would be great thanks!

Did you ever find out what this was? Is your hen ok? I have one that has not been walking, will not even attempt it, for 2 days now. She has a lump at the base of her breastbone (NOT the crop, the other end) that really worries me.
